🏞 Serving Up Smashes & Smiles: MKC’s Vision Beyond the Court 🏞

On 2nd August 2025, the Altona Badminton Centre was buzzing with energy, laughter, competitive cheers—and over 130 players who came together for MKC’s annual Shuttle Smash Tournament. But beyond the fierce rallies and the winning smashes, something even more meaningful took place: community happened.

At MKC, events like these are more than just sports or entertainment—they are opportunities to bring people together, celebrate our shared heritage, and strengthen the bonds of friendship and support that define our Konkan community here in Melbourne.


🫶 Why We Do This – More Than Just a Game

The world moves fast, and in the hustle of work, school runs, and life admin, it’s easy to lose touch with our roots and the people around us. MKC exists to bridge that gap. We create spaces where generations—kids, teens, parents, and even spirited masters (hello 45+ category!)—can come together, not just to compete, but to connect.

Every Shuttle Smash tournament is a reflection of that vision. It's not just the players who make the event a success, but the families who cheer, the volunteers who plan, and the spirit that fuels it all.

This year, the growing numbers and smiling faces told us one thing loud and clear: our community is alive, thriving, and ready for more.


👏 Behind the Scenes – Built on Volunteer Power

Let’s not forget: managing an event of this scale isn’t easy. It takes months of preparation, countless WhatsApp messages, and people willing to roll up their sleeves. This year, the MKC Committee, led by Jeevan, Vincent, Neel, and Mario, did exactly that—and with style.

Thanks to their dedication (and a lot of caffeine), the event started on time, ran smoothly, and ended with happy hearts and full stomachs. Our KYC (Know Your Committee) Series starts with our new President Rita Fernandes

I was born and raised in the city of Mumbai, with two brothers—an older and a younger one. Though I grew up in Mumbai, my family roots are in Mangalore. My father hails from the beautiful village of Yekkar, and my mother’s side is from Permude. Mangalore has always felt like home, and some of my most cherished memories are from the school holidays spent visiting my grandparents, extended family and cousins I got married in 2004 and, in 2006, my husband Jerry Fernandes and I moved to Melbourne. We are blessed with two wonderful daughters, Shania and Kiara. When it comes to hobbies, I love traveling—especially to places with mountains or scenic views. In the spirit of recognizing and celebrating exceptional achievements within our community, the Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) introduced the inaugural MKC Awards at this year's Monthi Fest. These awards aim to applaud and honor individuals who have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also made a significant impact on our community. In 2023, we are thrilled to have honored two outstanding individuals: Mira D'Silva and Nadine D'Silva. Mira D'Silva: A Trailblazer in Leadership Mira D'Silva's journey is nothing short of inspirational. Armed with a Master of Human Resources, she ventured to Melbourne in 2004. In 2006, she co-founded Delivery Centric, a highly regarded IT consulting services organization, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to business excellence.
