Our KYC (Know Your Committee) Series starts with our new President Rita Fernandes

I was born and raised in the city of Mumbai, with two brothers—an older and a younger one. Though I grew up in Mumbai, my family roots are in Mangalore. My father hails from the beautiful village of Yekkar, and my mother’s side is from Permude. Mangalore has always felt like home, and some of my most cherished memories are from the school holidays spent visiting my grandparents, extended family and cousins
I got married in 2004 and, in 2006, my husband Jerry Fernandes and I moved to Melbourne. We are blessed with two wonderful daughters, Shania and Kiara.
When it comes to hobbies, I love traveling—especially to places with mountains or scenic views. I enjoy watching comedies and, most importantly, spending quality time with my family, often playing board games together.

What’s your favorite Mangalorean dish?
Without a doubt, Panpole and Dukra Maas are my absolute favorites!

What inspired you to join the committee?
I joined the MKC committee to instill in my daughters the importance of stepping up, contributing to the community, and helping others. I believe that leading by example is the best way to show that every small effort can make a big difference.

Why did you become MKC President, and what do you hope to achieve?
Being part of the MKC committee has been a transformative journey for me. I began my involvement as a Secretary in the core committee, followed by a role as Cultural Secretary in my second year. These responsibilities helped me grow both personally and professionally, building my confidence along the way.
After two fulfilling years on the committee, my husband and daughters encouraged me to take the next step and apply for the role of President. I knew it wouldn’t be easy—balancing family, work, and community involvement takes dedication—but what’s life without a challenge?
I find strength in God’s promise from Isaiah 41:10:
"Do not be afraid—I am with you! I am your God. Let nothing terrify you. I’ll make you strong and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
With faith and the support of my family and community, I will do my best to serve. During my term, my goal is to make MKC a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone feels at home, regardless of their background. Specifically, I want to: Enhance, promote health and wellbeing, Celebrate community achievements and talent, encourage different sports, involve youth events and engagement
While it is important to honor our cherished traditions, I also aim to introduce fresh and exciting events to cater to all age groups.
My message to the MKC community
MKC is a transparent, democratic space where every member has the freedom to share their ideas, suggestions, and feedback openly.
I encourage everyone to get involved—whether by joining the committee or participating in events. Together, let’s make MKC a vibrant and supportive community.
