MKC’s Annual Sports Day 2025 – A Day of Fun, Food & Fierce Competition!

 


On a bright and sunny Labour Day Monday, the Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) gathered once again at Webster St Reserve, Point Cook, for our much-anticipated Annual Sports Day! With an early 8 AM start, Mangaloreans from all across Melbourne arrived, full of energy and excitement, ready for a day packed with sports, laughter, and community bonding. 

And of course, what’s an MKC event without food? The morning kicked off the right way—with a delicious spread of idli, sambar, and sheera, fueling everyone for the action ahead. By 8:45 AM sharp, the games were in full swing, with teams competing in cricket, and throwball, all while the crowd cheered them on. 

As the afternoon sun blazed, a hot and flavorful biryani was served for lunch, bringing smiles all around. It was fantastic to see everyone enjoying the feast while sharing stories and laughs. The games continued through the day, testing endurance and teamwork, but the real surprise came later—an ice cream treat for everyone! The perfect way to cool down after a long, hot day of competition. 


Many participants, especially our young first-timers, made the event extra special. It was heartwarming to see new faces joining our community, building friendships, and keeping the MKC spirit alive! A huge thank you to our new members who participated for the first time—hope to see you at many more events! 


A massive thank you to Wyndham Council for their ongoing support, as well as our generous sponsors, without whom this event (and many more to come) wouldn’t be possible. And of course, a huge round of applause to all our participants, who made the event exciting, especially the young ones who stepped up to join the teams. It’s all about coming together, playing together, and making lifelong memories!

I was born and raised in the city of Mumbai, with two brothers—an older and a younger one. Though I grew up in Mumbai, my family roots are in Mangalore. My father hails from the beautiful village of Yekkar, and my mother’s side is from Permude. Mangalore has always felt like home, and some of my most cherished memories are from the school holidays spent visiting my grandparents, extended family and cousins I got married in 2004 and, in 2006, my husband Jerry Fernandes and I moved to Melbourne. In the spirit of recognizing and celebrating exceptional achievements within our community, the Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) introduced the inaugural MKC Awards at this year's Monthi Fest. These awards aim to applaud and honor individuals who have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also made a significant impact on our community. In 2023, we are thrilled to have honored two outstanding individuals: Mira D'Silva and Nadine D'Silva. Mira D'Silva: A Trailblazer in Leadership Mira D'Silva's journey is nothing short of inspirational. Armed with a Master of Human Resources, she ventured to Melbourne in 2004.
