Image
On Saturday, 3rd May 2025 , the Sacred Heart School Hall in Oakleigh transformed into a glittering celebration of Mangalorean culture as the Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) hosted its much-loved annual event — Flavours of Mangalore Dinner Dance . With over 300 attendees, a vibrant atmosphere, and flavours that reminded us of home, it was a night to remember for all. From the moment the gates opened, you could feel the excitement in the air. The disco theme brought out the best in everyone — especially the ladies, who dazzled in their sparkly outfits, creating a sea of shimmer and colour. But what truly stood out was the incredible sense of togetherness . We were thrilled to welcome many new faces , particularly international students , who found in MKC a space that feels like home — a place where memories are made, food is shared, and friendships are born. Music That Moved Us The night’s entertainment was nothing short of spectacular. Our charismatic Emcee, Roshan Alphonso , s...

Our KYC (Know Your Committee) Series starts with our new President Rita Fernandes

I was born and raised in the city of Mumbai, with two brothers—an older and a younger one. Though I grew up in Mumbai, my family roots are in Mangalore. My father hails from the beautiful village of Yekkar, and my mother’s side is from Permude. Mangalore has always felt like home, and some of my most cherished memories are from the school holidays spent visiting my grandparents, extended family and cousins I got married in 2004 and, in 2006, my husband Jerry Fernandes and I moved to Melbourne. We are blessed with two wonderful daughters, Shania and Kiara. When it comes to hobbies, I love traveling—especially to places with mountains or scenic views. I enjoy watching comedies and, most importantly, spending quality time with my family, often playing board games together. What’s your favorite Mangalorean dish? Without a doubt, Panpole and Dukra Maas are my absolute favorites! What inspired you to join the committee? I joined the MKC committee to instill in my daughters the importance ...
